January is Personal Self-Defense Awareness Month, and I was invited to attend a self-defense class given by Thrive Causemetics at their offices in Los Angeles. We enjoyed a lovely lunch, got to try some of Thrive’s newest Sheer Strength™ Lip Plumping peptide gloss and hydrating lip tints, and were given tips on how to defend ourselves if we are accosted.
The company works with non-profits across the country that empower communities. Some of its causes include helping individuals fight cancer, emerge from homelessness, and survive domestic abuse.
It’s never too late to learn to protect yourself
Older people are assaulted every day so we must know how to defend ourselves. Over 50% of women and 30% of men have experienced physical or sexual assault during their lifetimes. To fend off an attacker you must educate yourself and take precautions because you never know when it will happen to you.
You may think that you are too old to learn self-defense skills. However, there have been many instances in recent years of seniors being assaulted because they are thought to be more vulnerable.
Peace Over Violence
One of the organizations that partnered with Thrive Causemetics for our event is Peace Over Violence. It is almost 50 years old, and its mission is to build healthy relationships, families, and communities that are free from sexual, domestic, and interpersonal violence.
Violence against women is the most pervasive and least recognized human rights abuse in the world. Peace Over Violence is a non-profit, feminist, multicultural, and volunteer organization.
TransLatin@Coalition
TransLatin@Coalition was founded in 2009 by a group of Transgender and gender-nonconforming Intersex immigrant women in Los Angeles. The transgender community is a frequent victim of violent assaults. Sadly, our intolerant political environment has made this abuse even worse and sometimes deadly.
President and CEO of TransLatin@Coalition, Bamby Salcedo, was honored by Thrive Causemetics with a new lip gloss called “Bamby.”
Self Defense class
We were given a quick overview of self-defense techniques that we could use in the event of an assault by members of Peace Over Violence. They taught us several effective kicks and punches and encouraged us to use our voice and direct eye contact to intimidate a perpetrator.

I feel guilty, I know I need a self-defense course. No excuses…
