How to Stop Feeling Invisible As a Woman Over 50

When we were growing up in the 1960s and 70s women were just beginning to become visible in terms of being independent and successful. Before that, they were June Cleaver housewives who obeyed their husband’s every word. A few had careers or worked full time because they had to, but most remained invisible and saw themselves as second fiddle to men.

All that changed when the women’s liberation movement took us out of the kitchen and into the world. High school girls now assume they will have careers, and many successful young women are balancing their families and jobs easily.  Women over 50, who long ago would have been written off as geriatric, are having their moments in the sun as well.

As I write this, we have a 50ish black woman as Vice President of the United States, a 70ish woman running the U.S. Treasury, and an 80ish woman serving as Speaker of the House. A Madame President has still eluded us, but older women are now respected and revered. Some politicians want to take us back to the days when women didn’t have a say, but now that the horse is out of the barn, that is unlikely to happen.

Forbes created a list called The 50 Over 50: Women Proving Success Has No Age Limit. It’s an inspiring and empowering article to read if you have days when you are feeling invisible.  We all do, sometimes.

Do you feel as though you are the lady who vanishes?

We can’t all be as hugely successful as the women over 50 mentioned on the Forbes list. But each of us has accomplished things we can be proud of even if they are not as visible.

The Atlantic published an article called The Invisibility of Older Women which delves into how older women have been portrayed in film and literature starting with “The Lady Vanishes.” 

Virginia Woolf once remarked, “One’s identity is transient and perhaps all the more so with age. As women become older, they entertain a wider set of choices about when and how they are seen.”

Do you associate invisibility with your looks?

French women embrace age and simplicity but American ad campaigns make it seem that the appearance of age is almost repulsive. Some women feel that if they don’t have the perfect figure, a large closet of clothes, or a big house, they may as well hide behind a curtain.

You can see how that scenario plays out in the reboot of HBO Max’s Sex in the City, called And Just Like That. The previous series glorified the glamour of being young and alluring, but now that the ladies are older, the reboot focuses on how they are coping with life’s hard knocks.

Every older woman has experienced the challenges that come with age but the comments and negative reactions to the show are revealing. Commenters are sickened by the fact that the women now have gray hair and wrinkles and are not as attractive as they were in the previous show. They are turned off by what they consider “unsexy” depictions of widowhood, menopause, and, heaven forbid, sex after 50.

Invisible woman syndrome is a social phenomenon

U.K. intelligence agencies made the decision to recruit middle-aged women as spies because many people see them as invisible.

Women who are post-menopause in the dating world must face the fact that men in their age group mostly prefer younger women.

Ageism aside, women over 50 do not have to feel invisible simply because society tries to make them feel that way. Just look at the Forbes list of 50 women over 50. Older women who are happy in their own skin are embracing the freedom to finally be themselves.

Here are ways to take yourself out of the shadows when you are feeling like you are wearing an invisible mask

  1. Be proud of what you have accomplished throughout your life. We have all had victories over the years and there is no reason to keep them under wraps. Talk about your experiences and how you have overcome challenges. Mentor those who can use your help and experience.
  2. Who you have become, because of your experiences, is what makes you unique. You don’t have to fit any kind of mold to stand out and be visible. Show your individuality in the way you dress, what pursuits you are interested in, and how you live. Radiate your remarkable presence to the world.
  3. Find pleasure in being alone. Some women feel invisible when they are by themselves, but those are the times when you can flourish. Instead of feeling lost and lonely use your time to set goals, come up with new ideas, and go deeper into yourself. Once you know what you truly want, you can act on it.
  4. Don’t feel you need many friends or fans to feel validated. Social media can make us feel unpopular unless we have tons of likes and comments. But you don’t need a crowd or huge following to make your mark. Be your own best friend and only spend time with those who value your gifts.
  5. Develop the ability to command attention. Women often put themselves last in the scheme of things or let others try to control them. If you want certain things, don’t shy away like a wilted daisy. Learn to ask for what you want and be upfront about it.
  6. Be grateful for what you have even if it doesn’t compare to others in the spotlight. Material possessions will not bring you happiness. Love and the little things in life that bring you joy are much more satisfying.

    Thank you for these excellent tips, Rebecca!
    There have only been a few times when I’ve felt invisible. I think it’s because I’ve always been good friends with my kids and now my grandkids. When someone seeks out your company, you feel seen. And important!
    And I teach writing classes to teenagers. Now THAT’s a way to always be seen!

    Not sure why, but never feel that invisible. Maybe because being introverted, I’m used to dealing with life on the fringes. When I need to be assertive, I have this other, more outgoing personality that comes out. Once I’ve made my point, she goes back in.

      That works, Laurie. Everyone is different. Many more people are introverted than we assume, particularly actors who appear to be extroverts.

    We need to know what we like and want and own it. For three years I wore my natural gray hair color because everyone was telling me it looked great and that we should feel comfortable in our own skin. But I hated it, it made me feel old and ready for change. Once I started dying my hair again, I felt more like myself again and not someone everyone was telling me I should be.

      I am so with you about the hair, Jennifer. I got really skunky looking during the lockdown and considered going gray but didn’t feel good about it either. Getting hair dyed is a pain but I always feel better afterward.

    I’m so glad to see this addressed. What I do to not vanish is stay informed, educated and work on my looks at 74. I started a Workplace support in the 90’s after leaving a corp job bc my looks got me too much attention. It l-asted for 20+ yrs. and is now Gender Justice in Minnesota. What I do to stay young is find a cause and go for it.! We need support groups for older women! We have always held our power in groups! This is just another mountain to climb and we need leaders to help us. Like you! I love what you are doing. You have a purpose – a vocation- that is a passion that has met a great need!
