The Beauty Of Aging: How To Foster A Positive Body Image As You Age

by Jennifer Dawson Leave a Comment

We live in a society that equates beauty with youthfulness, and it’s why many women start to feel invisible or experience body dissatisfaction once they see the signs of aging. To feel confident and have a sense of self-worth, most women will explore various options to rejuvenate their appearance. In fact, a study has found that 43.7 percent of ladies over the age of 60 consider having cosmetic surgery since it’s viewed as an effective way to restore their youthful looks.

Most of us feel the need to endure painful procedures or buy expensive skincare products since we perceive aging as a flaw or a weakness. However, trying to meet unrealistic ideals can be damaging to your overall wellness since you’re constantly battling aging rather than accepting it as a natural part of life. Your 50s, 60s, and beyond are a special time since you now have the opportunities to make new beginnings and pursue long-held passions. To be happier and make the most of your golden years, think about celebrating your authentic self and embracing the physical changes that come with aging. Here’s how you can reframe your perspective on aging and foster a positive body image as the years go by.

Focus on Health

Aging can change your appearance in various ways. Your skin can get thinner and drier, leading to fine lines and wrinkles. It can cause subtle alterations in your facial features since you’ll start to lose definition in your jawline once you age. It may even change your figure since hormonal shifts can lead to increased body fat. Seeing all these changes occurring at the same time can be alarming for most women, and it’s why they opt to undergo invasive procedures like liposuction and facelifts, since these may address all these perceived flaws in an instant. These treatments can be effective if your only goal is to improve your appearance, but keep in mind that there are other things that you can do to enhance your visuals.

Consider focusing on your health if you want to improve the way you look and feel. Regular exercise, for instance, can help to enhance aging skin, and research has found that resistance training can improve skin elasticity and dermal thickness in older adults. Meanwhile, eating foods that are rich in nutrients like antioxidants and Vitamin C can enhance collagen production, which can keep skin looking firm and hydrated.

Working out and following a healthy diet allows you to manage your weight without having to go under the knife. To stay on your weight loss path, switch up your workouts so there’s always something new to look forward to, and be kind to yourself since it takes time to achieve results. Over time, you’ll discover that these lifestyle changes not only contribute to a better appearance, but they may also lower your risks of developing age-related diseases like osteoporosis, heart disease, and chronic inflammation.

Limit Exposure to Negative Media

Some TV shows and publications can contribute to negative self-image since they promote age-based stereotypes that can make you feel anxious or depressed about getting older. Gossip and entertainment shows have a tendency to make fun of aging celebrities by pointing out their wrinkles or insinuating that they’ve had work done. Even seemingly positive portrayals, such as stories about actresses who look decades younger than their real age, can make some women feel insecure or helpless since they’re unable to meet these impossible standards of modern aging.

Constant exposure to negative media can contribute to low self-esteem, which can lead to anxiety or depression. To foster a positive body image, limit your exposure to shows, websites, print media, or social media accounts that reinforce negative views of aging. Instead, look for media that features empowering depictions of older adults. Think documentaries like ‘SuperAgers,’ which features older people who are thriving due to their healthy lifestyles. You can also follow older influencers who make wholesome and entertaining content about their hobbies, interests, travels, or personal style.

Live with a Purpose

Engaging in activities that enable you to help your community or learn something new allows you to live with a purpose. Having a strong purpose in life enhances your mental resilience since it reduces anxiety related to aging. It also boosts your self-worth, which can counter negative feelings about your appearance. Try volunteering at a community garden or soup kitchen, or help organize events at your local senior center or public library. If you love the arts, consider leading tours at a museum or teaching art classes to disadvantaged youth. You can also mentor young adults or start a crafting club in your neighborhood.

Embrace the beauty of aging by making conscious efforts to focus on your wellbeing and living with a purpose. Steer clear of anything that perpetuates negative beauty standards, and know that you are enough, just as you are.
