What is Moringa and How is it Used as a Superfood?

by Rebecca Forstadt-Olkowski Leave a Comment

I interviewed Dr. Carrie Waterman who is a researcher serving as a scientist and consultant for Kuli Kuli Foods.  The company makes products made from the leaves of the Moringa plant, which is a superfood.

She also works with funding from the National Institute of Health and the USDA in promoting Moringa production as it has multiple uses.

Watch my interview with Dr. Carrie Waterman on YouTube.

Moringa is loaded with fiber and can help with gut health. It contains unique phytochemicals and plant compounds much like plants from the Brassica family. (Broccoli, Bok Choy, Cabbage, Cauliflower)These compounds have been shown to help with liver health, regulate blood sugar, and reduce inflammation.

Moringa has been used for thousands of years in India and is popular in the Philippines as well as other tropical regions.

There have been studies that show that Moringa can be used to relieve constipation in mice and rat studies. Companies like Kuli Kuli are working to promote more studies on humans.

The leaves are nutrient-dense so Moringa powder is an excellent diet enhancement.

Many people use it as a laxative by drinking it as tea in the morning. If you do this, start with a small amount, and work up to a larger one to see how it works with your body.

It’s important to purchase any superfood from a reliable company that tests like Kuli Kuli to make sure it is high quality and safe to consume.

Where does Moringa grow?

Kuli Kuli Moringa Powder and Gut Bliss

Moringa is grown primarily on the border between India and Pakistan. You can also find it near the equator in East Africa, Madagascar, the Middle East, and the Philippines. Other areas it thrives are in warm climates that include parts of Mexico California, Texas, Florida, and Hawaii.

Only 2 of its 13 species are meant to be consumed.

Dr. Waterman suggests that you try to grow it in your own backyard. She grew Moringa plants where she lives in New Jersey.

Moringa contains less water than other plants which is what makes it nutrient rich. When dried, the powder is potent. Put it in soups and other recipes.
