I attended an event where clinical thermographer Dr. Hillary Smith, D.C., was a speaker. Her talk was about “Thermography” as a better alternative to mammograms. She stressed that rather than focusing on breast cancer awareness, we need to be more diligent about maintaining breast health.
The advantage of thermography, (Digital Infrared Thermal Imaging) is that the technology can detect the earliest signs of inflammation so that breast cancer can be managed before it requires major surgery or chemo. DITI is a non-invasive, clinical imaging procedure that is painless, radiation-free, and effective. It’s safe for all ages and is not affected by breast density. The procedure also spots hard-to-find disorders and infections.
DITI doesn’t require contact with the body like boobie-crunching mammograms. That, alone causes breast health problems. I’m not saying you shouldn’t have a mammogram but know there are safer and more pleasant alternatives. Check to see if thermography is covered by your insurance as it often isn’t.
Do what you can to keep your breasts healthy. Did you know that men can also get breast cancer? I knew a guy who went through it decades ago.
Below are 7 tips for better breast health
- Throw away your underwire bras. They’re uncomfortable and unnecessary. Try a well-fitting wire-free or sports bra and save your push-ups for special occasions.
- Take your bra off when you’re hanging around the house. “Let it all hang out.” Your breasts will stay healthier when they’re FREE!
- Maintain a healthy weight. Excess weight can increase your chances of developing breast cancer.
- Exercise for 45 minutes or more at least 5 days a week. Exercise, like walking, boosts your immune system and lowers your levels of estrogen and insulin.
- Limit your alcohol intake. Eat fresh grapes instead of drinking wine to reduce your estrogen levels. The Resveratrol in grape skins contains healthy antioxidants and is anti-aging.
- Add more broccoli, kale, and other cruciferous vegetables to your diet. They contain sulforaphane, which helps to prevent cancer cells from multiplying.
- Drink green tea – Japanese women have much lower incidences of breast cancer because they consume antioxidant-rich green tea like matcha, a potent green tea powder. Organic matcha tea is a little more expensive, but one glass is the equivalent of 10 glasses of green tea in terms of the nutrition and antioxidants it has.
When you focus on breast health, by following the suggestions above, rather than simply being aware of breast cancer, you will stay healthier whether you currently have cancer or not. If you are able to catch cancer cells early, by using thermography or other means, you will have a much better chance of survival and extended good health. Improving your immunity will help you heal faster if you’re undergoing treatment.
So bounce your boobies gleefully and burn your bra, at least when you’re hanging around at home and keep your breasts healthy and happy!
