Do your vegetables get mushy or go bad fast in your refrigerator crisper? Mine often do so I was curious to try a little bag that purports to keep them fresher longer. It’s called Veggie Saver available on Amazon.
Veggies Saver is a washable bag that you can use to store your vegetables in your refrigerator’s crisper.
I made a quick video to show you how it works.

The first thing you need to do when you receive it is to wash the bag in your washing machine. This activates the fibers in the bag. It is made of natural fiber and is non-toxic.
Soak your vegetables in lukewarm water with a small amount of white vinegar for 15 minutes to reduce germs and bacteria.
Dampen the bag a little and massage the water into the middle layer and then wring it out.
Place your produce into the bag and put it in your crisper.
You will want to wash the bag every 2-3 weeks to keep it clean.
Veggie Saver eliminates having to use plastic wrap that can cause your vegetables to go bad and get slimy. Have you ever found something tucked away in the back of your crisper that looks like it could have been a science experiment gone bad? I sure have.
You may want to sprinkle your bag with water if it starts to dry out.
If your crisper is too crowded like mine because I share the fridge with a roommate, you can also put the bag on a shelf in your refrigerator and add a little extra moisture to it.
The Veggie Saver comes with instructions for specific types of vegetables and fruits. For instance, if you want to store potatoes, onions, and garlic you will want to use a separate dry bag that you can place in your pantry. If you have cut into the onion or potato, then move it into a damp Veggie Saver in the crisper.
Mushrooms and okra should be stored in a Dry Veggie Saver bag in the crisper.
I was a little concerned that it said you could store berries in the bag as they would tend to get squished and stain the bag. It says to nestle small baskets of berries in or next to a dampened Veggie Saver in the crisper. I’m not sure I would personally bother with that as it could be messy. The same goes for tomatoes.
The Veggie Saver is made to last through multiple washings and is 100% compostable. It is made in India but only by certified factories using ethical and fair-trade practices.
Facts about Veggie Saver
The product won eight awards globally including the New York Times Australia Style Magazine Visionary Award for Food & Beverage.
Americans throw away over $1,600 worth of food each year because it goes bad. Veggie Saver extends its shelf life which saves time with fewer trips to the store and combats food waste and pollution.
My thoughts
It makes sense to avoid using plastic wrap to store produce as it’s much better for the environment and avoids waste. I will be honest and say I don’t bother soaking my vegetables in vinegar although I’m sure it’s a good idea. Veggie Saver is a large enough bag to store plenty of veggies but you may want to order 2 or 3 extra bags to layer in your crisper if you have a larger family. It currently sells for $19.99 but will save you in plastic wrap in the long run and will last for a long time.
