“The Queen of Second Chances” is a lighthearted romantic comedy that is both humorous and thoughtful.
Carra, short for Carraway, is the young lady who is persuaded by her real estate broker stepmom to work at a senior center to get leads so she can afford her apartment. She goes reluctantly not feeling comfortable coercing her charges to let go of their money.
Carra’s job requires her to deliver meals to senior’s homes in the morning and work as a recreational aide at the center in the afternoon. She soon ingratiates herself to the seniors in the center, but her inventive and enthusiastic nature doesn’t follow protocol and she butts heads with the staid and uncompromising director Judith.
Jay is a handsome elder law attorney who is the largest donor to the center where his Nana attends. On the day she interviewed for her job, Carra observed him becoming irritated about food being served with too many carbs and the fact that memory-impaired seniors were gambling away their money at gin rummy. Even though he was acting like a jerk his dimples and perfect butt attracted her.
Carra becomes concerned about the welfare of some of the seniors on her delivery route and asks Jay to come along to corroborate her findings. One woman is a hoarder who they upset while attempting to clean and organize her home. Carra also suspects a man on her route is a victim of fraud and abuse and they intervene in an attempt to save him.
A relationship begins to develop between Carra and Jay, who is 10 years her senior after he tells his chic and conniving girlfriend their relationship is over.
The book is a funny and easy read that points out what could happen at a senior center if realtors become involved.
