We are officially in the summertime of 2022 and the July 4th weekend. It’s a time for picnics, fireworks, and time with friends and family. As women, many of us feel that some of the freedom we are supposed to be celebrating has been lost over the SCOTUS decision to overturn Roe vs Wade. No matter how you personally feel about the decision, it was a precedent that held for 50 years and was fought for many years by Baby Boomer women and men.
Meanwhile, our Baby Boomer bloggers have been pondering a host of topics, and here is what they have written about this week.
The ravages of old age
Laurie Stone reads off the day’s headlines as her father sits in a hospital hallway. Other patients are around, mostly weary old men and depressed-looking young ones. Many use walkers. In some rooms, guys perch on the edge of their beds as if they can’t decide whether to rise or not. Nurses and doctors bustle by with clipboards and medical carts. The air has an institutional, gravy-like smell. Her 80-year-old father sits in a wheelchair on this Fourth of July.
A guide to healing someone who is ill
Carol Cassara remembers clearly how helpless she felt during her late BFF’s stay at Stanford Medical Center. How she wanted to be helpful but didn’t know how. THAT was the genesis of her healing tools. Her friend, Marilyn used the first draft versions, then affirmed, “Even my nurses agree you should make and market these.” No magic, but studies prove that expressing feelings about a condition supports healing and in this post, she describes how to use her Guided Journal For Healing.
Canada Day
Diane is celebrating Canada Day, her country’s 155th Birthday by thinking of her son, the soldier…
The “joys” of traveling when you are older
Tom from Sightings Over Sixty is on the road over July 4th, visiting family in Wisconsin. But honestly, he says, traveling gets a little more difficult as we get older. Check out Travel — Too Much Trouble? to see if you can identify with some of the issues that seem to affect a lot of us.
Summer safety
Think safety for summer fun to prevent injuries before they happen, advises Rita R. Robison, consumer and personal finance journalist. Never leave a child unattended in or near the water, bury your beach umbrella two feet into the sand, and never use grills indoors. And, remember fireworks safety tips, too, as injuries are climbing.
What’s a bougie?
A newspaper article caught the attention of folks in Meryl Baer of Beach Boomer Bulletin’s home town. The story announced that her community was going bougie, or actually, was already visibly bougie. Baer had no idea what the term bougie meant when she first heard about the story – the talk of the town. She explains the term and how her once almost-sleepy town is changing in this week’s post, My Town Officially Bougie.
What do you want out of life?
I did a Google search to find out what women in my demographic were searching for online. Something that came up was “What do Women Over Sixty Want Out of Life?” So, I listed some of the answers. Do you feel that you can relate to them, or do you have other things you want out of life instead? I would love to know.
Enjoy the 4th of July and/or Canada Day festivities and stay safe out there.

How could it be July, already? How?
