How to Dress if You Are a Petite Apple Shape Over 50

by Rebecca Forstadt-Olkowski 9 Comments

This page, which is a guide for petite apple shaped women over 50, has evolved since I first published it. I keep finding new ideas all the time. I myself, am a 5″2″ apple shape so I am my best experiment.

What is an apple shape?

Apple shapes are women who carry their weight in the the midsection, with a fuller or apron belly. Our waists and hips are generally more rectangular. Apples may or may not have broad shoulders and a larger bust. Our best asset is usually our shapely legs. Think of Catherine Zeta-Jones or Drew Barrymore.

In my younger days, I was a thin rectangle. But now, in my 70s, my waist and stomach have expanded. I’m petite at 5’2″, tummy-heavy, busty, and have great legs.

How to know which body shape you are

There are four main body shapes: rectangle, pear, apple, and hourglass. Some stylists have more complicated analyses with multiple body shapes, but I like to keep things simple.

If you don’t your body shape, I recently discovered an AI body calculator. It allows you to upload a full-length photo of yourself to analyze your body type without measurements. This is a screenshot of part of my analysis. (And don’t worry, no harm came to me from using AI)

Body Shape AI Calculator results for an apple shape.

The app also gives fashion recommendations that include A-line dresses, wrap dresses, Empire waist tops, and pencil skirts paired with flowy tops, peplum jackets, wrap tops, dark-wash jeans, or trousers. It suggested I avoid wearing Bodycon dresses, sheer tops, straight-cut garments, and belts worn tightly at the waist.

I have a few issues with the above, which I will explain below.

If not styled correctly, a petite apple shape can look like a sausage in clothing

A woman under 5’4″ is considered “petite.” Fit petites are often defined as gamine and look adorable in clothing. But when stubborn fat builds in the middle, it is easy to look like a knockwurst.

In terms of styling a petite apple shape, the goal is to create a balanced silhouette by elongating the frame and defining the waist.

These eight styling tips will help take the emphasis off a thick waist and make a petite apple shape look taller.

  1. V-Necks & Scoop Necks – These necklines create the illusion of a longer torso and draw attention upward, away from the midsection. I look like a tank in a crew neck and much prefer a V or Scoop neck.
  2. Avoid drop shoulder seams. Drop-shoulder tops emphasize an apple shape’s top heaviness and roundness. Choose tops with seams that sit at the shoulder with a structured look. You may even want to add shoulder pads if you have sloping shoulders.
  3. Empire Waist & A-Line Dresses – Dresses that cinch just below the bust and flow away from the tummy help define your shape without clinging to problem areas. Be careful that the dress does not give the illusion of pregnancy. Sometimes it is better if the waistline is slightly below the bust or has an inset that will better define the waist.
  4. High-waisted, Straight-Leg, bootcut pants, flair, and wide-leg pants —These styles elongate your legs, giving you a streamlined look. They also balance out a fuller midsection. Avoid low-rise pants that emphasize the tummy. I have found wide-leg pants to be particularly flattering, even though apple shapes typically have shapely legs and may feel they are hiding them. That’s because wide-leg pants with a layering piece (like a blazer) make your stomach disappear, whereas tighter-fitting pants, like skinny jeans, make your belly protrude.
  5. Structured Jackets and Open Cardigans – Fitted blazers and blazer-style cardigans create vertical lines that slim and lengthen your frame while offering a tailored look. When used as a layering piece, a blouse can be tucked in and belted, rather than worn out to define the waist.
  6. Monochrome Outfits or Vertical Prints – Dressing in one color from head to toe or choosing vertical stripes rather than horizontal helps create a continuous line, making you look taller and leaner.
  7. Avoid Boxy & Oversized Clothes – While loose tops may feel comfortable and cover your belly, they can make you look shapeless. Instead, opt for fitted tops with ruching or wrap styles that define your waistline.
  8. Choose the Right Fabrics – Medium-weight fabrics with some structure (like crepe, denim, or ponte knit) help create a smooth silhouette, while clingy fabrics may highlight areas you’d prefer to downplay.

There is no need to wear a maternity blouse if you have a tummy!

Many style guides for apple-shaped women advise us to wear long, flowy tops, tunics, and peplums, but they make us look bigger than we are.

Tied-and-wrapped tops are a better choice. They give your waist some definition without emphasizing your large tummy. Below, I am wearing a geometrically patterned wrap blouse by Lands’ End.

Apple shapes with large busts often need to purchase a larger blouse size than their pants, as their hips are more narrow. It all depends on the brand and cut.

Create a Column of Color

When you wear a dark color on the top and bottom, you can contrast it by wearing a lighter blazer, vest, cardigan, or jacket to give the illusion of a column of color.

Watch this short video to see an example.

Cream Blazer | Sweater Tank Top | Pants | Shoes | Socks

A dark color doesn’t need to be black. You can create the same illusion by wearing navy blue, dark maroon, dark green, chocolate brown, or charcoal gray. Dark colors are receding and camouflage the tummy.

You can also wear a light-colored top and bottom with a dark blazer or jacket over it. The model below is wearing a white top and bottom with a navy cotton blazer cardigan by Quince

Another fashionable and sophisticated way to dress is to wear a pair of pants or a skirt, and a layering piece like a jacket or sweater in the same dark color tones. (They don’t have to be a perfect match.) You can pair this with a simple white T-shirt or any other color blouse. The white blouse will add simplicity and crispness, and then you can accessorize to match your personality. For instance, you could add a colorful scarf, bangle bracelets, or add a pop of color in your shoes or purse.

To French tuck or not

Maybe?

For a long time, I didn’t believe a French tuck would work with my big belly. Many stylists working with petite apple shapes recommend it. A tuck creates an optical illusion that makes your legs look longer. Wearing a tailored jacket over a blouse or sweater, slightly tucked in, will disguise your belly.

I French-tucked a Nordstrom V-neck cashmere sweater into my Gloria Vanderbilt Amanda high-waisted bootcut jeans and layered them with a black DKNY tailored blazer and Sperry Loafers. Excuse my hideous hair. It was due for a cut.

How to wear your blouse tucked in while hiding your belly

Apple-shapes often avoid tucking in their tops, but with wide-leg pants, a belt, and a layering piece like a blazer or sweater, a tucked-in top can look ultra-flattering. In fact, it’s becoming my favorite formula for apple-shaped style.

For those who hate tucking in a blouse

Not all petite apple shapes feel comfortable with tucked blouses, especially those who prefer a more casual style. That’s perfectly cool! The truth is, you don’t have to. Wear your blouse out if that makes you happy. You may want to try an asymmetrical hemmed blouse rather than a flat hemmed blouse. An asymmetrical hem draws attention away from your stomach.

The blouse below has an uneven hemline, but also has a V-neck and is a button-down that takes the emphasis off the waistline.

Other ways to disguise your middle

Breton stripe shirts are French and chic, but if you are an apple shape, it’s better to wear vertical stripes rather than horizontal ones. Choose thin stripes over thick. Sometimes diagonal stripes or optical illusion patterns will slenderize your waist, but if you aren’t careful, they can accentuate your stomach.

A long necklace or scarf can also divert attention away from your stomach.

Petites of any body shape should avoid large prints as they can be overwhelming and make them look larger. Stick with small floral or geometric prints instead.

The best dress designs for petite apple shapes

An A-line shift, empire waist, or wrap dress is flattering for apple-shaped bodies.

Apple shapes tend to have great legs, but it’s best to stick with knee-length or longer dresses because they’re classier on older women.

This gorgeous silk wrap dress by Lilysilk checks all the boxes for an apple-shaped petite.

What are the best pant styles for apples to wear?

Apple shapes usually look best in high-rise pants because they have tummy control, although some apples prefer mid-rise. Mid-rise pants slip down on me and accentuate my muffin top. It really depends on your body. Each of us is different. I love boot cuts, straight leg, flared, and wide leg pants.

Apple shapes can even look fabulous in pleated wide-leg pants if the pleats lie flat.

Never wear a flowy blouse with wide-legged or baggy pants. Wear a fitted top with wide-legged pants or a flowy blouse with narrow-legged pants.

Petite apple shapes should avoid big pockets and protruding zippers on pants. Side zippers are best.

I’m glad you like the top, Laurie. I do too, although I may slit the sides a bit. Thankfully, the belly fat is slimming down.

From one apple to another…years ago I helped women with resumes, job interview skills, how to dress for interviews, etc. We would take field trips to local consignment shops and buy ‘interview outfits’. Now I love tunic-style tops and vests paired with leggings.
