Best Drug-Free Pain Relief Devices for Seniors 2025

by Rebecca Forstadt-Olkowski Leave a Comment

If you are a senior over 50, chances are you have experienced aches and pains in some form. At-home therapeutic pain relief devices are often sold to athletes, but they can also benefit older people. Products abound in this category, but here are a few you may want to try.

TENS therapy is a method of pain relief that uses a mild electrical current. TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. At-home devices using TENS are battery-operated and portable, and they usually include sticky pads called electrodes.

These devices can help reduce pain and muscle spasms for arthritis, knee pain, and sports injuries. They do not cure pain but relieve it without the use of drugs.

The Max Power Relief® TENS Unit by Omron is a medical wearable. The device has 6 body pain modes (shoulder, lower back, arm, foot, leg, and joint. You may feel a slight tingling sensation depending on which setting you use.

Three massage-like modes (rub, tap, knead), each with 15 adjustable power intensities, help relieve pain. The device is portable so you can take it wherever you travel. Omron is a highly regarded company best known for its blood pressure devices.

Migraine relief

Cefaly migraine device

Cefaly Connected is a device clinically proven to treat migraine headaches without the use of drugs. You wear it on your forehead. It stimulates and desensitizes the trigeminal nerve, which causes the discomfort.

The treatment lasts twenty minutes and is connected by Bluetooth to a smartphone app. Health professionals recommend it because it is safe and effective.

As with most devices that use stimulation as treatment, do not use it if you have metallic implants in your head or wear a pacemaker or defibrillator.

The device has a treatment mode and a prevent mode, which will help you avoid getting a migraine in the first place. You will feel it tingle, which can be unnerving but does the job. It costs a little over $400 but takes the pain to a bearable level.

Another product that helps to relieve headaches and eye strain is the Bob and Brad EyeOasis 2 Eye Massager.

Watch my video demonstrating how to use it.

The box includes the eye massager, a handy carrying case, and a standard USB charging cable. A comfortable pad protects the eyes while it gives you an air cushion massage. You can adjust it for vibration and heat.

It has built-in sounds but can be connected to your favorite music station using its smartphone app.

One thing to consider is if you have had recent eye surgery, you must wait until your doctor gives you the go ahead to use it.
