Do you remember when we wore granny dresses? They were countrified and prudish long dresses with high necks, long sleeves, and lots of ruffles. I think they may have been a solution to the mid-thigh mini-skirts we were wearing.
Granny dresses haven’t exactly gone away but are now much sexier. They’re also an attractive and comfortable clothing item to wear now that many of us are now grannies.
Go, calico girl
Our old dresses had calico designs with tiny prints. Some of the modern-day versions have bolder designs but still have that casual country look which is charming.
They don’t need to have high-necked collars
A high and sweetly modest neckline with a ruffle is what I remember most about our old granny dresses.
High necklines will help older women who want to hide their neck wrinkles but it’s also flattering to wear granny dresses with scoop or V-necks because that can take the focus off a bulgy middle. Who says we grannies can’t be alluring? Most active women over 50 aren’t sitting in rocking chairs crocheting like they did in the good old days.
At home comfort
A long maxi dress can be comfy and airy. I’ve always loved wearing long dresses because they allow air to come up from the bottom. A long-sleeved maxi dress will help cool off menopausal hot flashes while it keeps your arms and legs from getting a chill. You could even wear one with nothing underneath and no one would know it. LOL
Some of my favorite granny dress designs
Below you will find maxi “dress”granny dress” designs that almost anyone can wear no matter what their age or size. Enjoy.

Heehee! Many years ago, when Husby was building our underground house, he ordered massive beams from a small , privately-owned sawmill in British Columbia. He told me the owner was a ‘Fundamentalist’, whatever that means. And that he had 3 wives. When the guy came to deliver our beams, he had one of his wives with him. Was I friendly? Outgoing? Invite her in for tea? Sadly (it’s one of my more shameful moments), I stared at her through the kitchen window. I wanted to see how she was dressed! She just sat in the cab of the truck the whole 15 minutes and never got out. Sigh.
