I was invited to a private home (mansion) in the Malibu Hills to cover a charity event for Operation Smile. It helps children all over the world who have cleft lips and palates. I wrote a post about the organization on my Los Angeles blog here. The invitation specifically asked that we dress in Malibu Boho.
I wasn’t exactly sure what that meant, but I found out after I got there.
The event attracted a host of socialites, philanthropists, and celebrities. Grammy Award winner Macy Gray was one of the entertainers and the MC was Billy Bush from Access Hollywood fame. Lydia Hearst, daughter of Patty Hearst, received an award for her work with the non-profit.
The weather was a little cool and overcast when I arrived but by the afternoon, the sky was blue and the temperature warm.
I wore an outfit given to me by Israeli clothing company Alembika. I was convinced I fit in with the rest of the crowd when I received a compliment from an adorable gay guy wearing shorts with a blazer. He is in the second photo left in the first row below. I’m in the center holding a glass of vino.

Malibu BOHO style
Style ran the gamut as is common in Los Angeles. We are a city of creatives where anything goes. Aside from sunglasses, which almost everyone wore, straw hats were a key wardrobe item. I wish I had brought mine along, but luckily it wasn’t too hot.
Many women wore maxi print dresses that were distinctly BOHO (short for bohemian) and others much younger than me wore mini dresses or cool sundresses. Some wore mostly black with faux leather jackets. Real leather has become a no-no in L.A. Others were creatively casual.
The crowd was of all ages. Here are two older women in front rocking their Malibu Boho.
Several vendors were also set up for shopping including one selling handmade Italian shoes. She has a shop in the Malibu Colony called Beautisoles by Robyn Shreiber, and you can see how fabulous they are. Sadly, they were way out of my price range.
Craft cocktails were served and delicious tidbits. A Sees Candy vendor greeted me with complimentary dark chocolate. I didn’t want to leave but it was a long haul back to Pasadena.
I love supporting worthy causes and much mullah was raised at this event to benefit the kids.
Enjoy these affordable BOHO styles.
