National Girlfriends Day is celebrated on August 1st but can be celebrated at any time of the year. Having female friends is essential as we grow older. We all know women tend to live longer than men. That’s why it’s so important to have a support network to help each other navigate through our roadmap to health.
And do we ever go through changes
We grow boobs, have periods, give birth to children, breastfeed, deal with PMS, hot flashes, peri-menopause, menopause, and post-menopause, not to mention take care of everyone and anybody. And we love to do all of it together. We share stories, fears, tears, anxiety, anger, and laughter with our friends who are going through similar experiences.

We can also help each other stay healthy by teaming up on the roadmap to health to eat well, get check-ups, work out, relax, and work on our mental health.
When one of my girlfriends found out she had colon cancer, a group of us took turns visiting her, sitting in the doctor’s office while she went through chemo, preparing food, chatting, cleaning and making sure she had everything she needed. Fortunately, she’s now cancer-free. It would have been difficult for her if she didn’t have girlfriends because she’s single with no children.
Eat Healthy Together
If your goal is to stay healthy, lose weight or maintain a slim physique, set aside regular times with a girlfriend or group of friends who have similar intents. Share healthy meals together either at each other’s homes or at restaurants. Instead of sabotaging each other with tempting tidbits, like sweets or potato chips, have a tapas party with small dishes of nutritious treats.
Is there a health fair going on in your area? Why not embrace National Girlfriend’s Day and take a girlfriend along with you to get checked out. Health fairs often give free screenings and some even hand out swag. Lose weight together and keep tabs on each other’s progress. You could even conduct your own “weigh in’s.” It’s important that you keep your health in check.
The emergence of telehealth doctors and similar services make the process more convenient and less time-consuming because you can reach out to these medical professionals 24/7. Often, their services are covered by Medicare.
Women love to work out together whether it’s a dance class, aqua aerobics, hiking, bike riding, online classes, or even pole dancing. It’s always more fun to workout in a group. There are gyms that cater only to women or to people of a certain age, so you won’t be intimidated by hard-bodied 20-year-olds. Of course, it’s also fun to flirt with handsome young fitness trainers at coed gyms when you have a group of women to join in on the fun.
There’s nothing like spending enjoying National Girlfriends day by relaxing in a spa. Relax in the whirlpool tub, take a steam or sauna, have mani-pedis, do yoga, meditate, or enjoy a sublime massage. Reducing stress is a crucial key to good health. One of my friends completely changed her entire personality for the better when she became a Laughter Yoga instructor. Now she smiles all the time and feels good about herself.
